Keep chaos within,
to give birth to a dancing star.
After Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Prologue §5. Our paraphrase.
The name comes from a line in the prologue to Thus Spoke Zarathustra, section 5: one must still have chaos in oneself to give birth to a dancing star. Reading it, we thought at once of Matisse’s Dance. Bodies pulling each other, turning, spinning outward, as if they could no longer hold the life pouring out of them.
We made the figures in the painting three-dimensional and kept adjusting each turn, each twist, each point where one body meets the next. Later we tried a ring. But a ring face flattens the figures, and once they were flat the turning, the pulling and the outward growth slowly went.
So we kept the ear cuff and let these bodies go on dancing along the ear. No piercing needed. It fits either ear.
It is for the person inside the body who still wants to run, to spin, to walk out of the old life. She only sleeps now and then. She has never gone.
